To arrive at a diagnosis of cancer the doctor will review the personal background and family physicians, perform a physical exam and will order lab tests, studies, images, scans and other tests deemed necessary, according to the clinical picture of each patient.
In many cases one will order a biopsy procedure that removes a sample of tissue that is examined under a microscope by a pathologist to determine if there are cancerous cells.
